After way too long off the water, I finally escaped for an
afternoon sail in the sun - something we haven't seen much of this winter.
There was little wind and it was cool, but enjoyed the time on the water
mostly. I hoisted the main which worked well, and rather than struggling with jib - I hoisted the spinnaker staysail and used it as my jib. This worked well in the light winds and made sailing more fun than just by main alone. After I got a brief sailing fix, I turned to shaking down the boat a bit. I turned on the engine and wanted to run it for a bit to get it warm since it hasn't been run since November. Well apparently I got it too warm... it overheated. Damn. If it's not one thing it's another. I tried troubleshooting it, but there was no easy solution. I limped back home under sail - and used the engine just to get into the dock. I was less than happy with the engine but knew that this could be fixed somehow... Pat of Pat's Marine Engines dropped by later the following week and got me all fixed up. Seems that there was a coolant reservoir line that busted and allowed the coolant to leak out thus causing the overheating problem. In addition we had a worn belt that wasn't helping anything so he replaced it with a spare we had aboard. Per Pat's instructions, I fixed the coolant issue by replacing the reservoir and tubing, and I even reworked the setup of our new batteries to solve the alternator issue that was causing the belt wear. We're doing much better now! |
